The One after Draft Day

So...about yesterday. If you don't know (or live under a rock), even if you don't really care you probably heard it was Draft Day for the NFL (why did I capitalize that like it was a National Holiday?). Admittedly I am not a huge football fan unless my Seahawks or Cowboys are playing. I could probably tell you a little about how the game is played and I might even be able to impress you with my knowledge of five or six player names on the aforementioned teams. I have never, however, watched the draft. Let me say that again. I am thirty #&(* years old and I have NEVER watched the NFL draft. Last night? I was pulled in by the hype. Not the hype about the draft but about one player in particular. Johnny Manziel. For the record, I know he played for Texas A&M. Honestly, I only know that because 1. My husband is a huge football and baseball fanatic so I might have heard his name mentioned and 2. just in case I didn't hear it there, I have several alumni in my family from Texas A&M and it probably came up on my Facebook wall a time or two (that is a gross understatement). I don't know how many pass completions he had or how many yards he threw for. What I do know is his fans are the most passionate I have ever seen in a long time. So are his haters. The guy has got to be doing something right I suppose. Didn't he win an award or something? I can relate it to a few Nascar drivers that I am fans of. It's the same thing. All you have to do is have a little more success than the other guy and BAM!

Nevertheless, I was intrigued and so I tuned in to see who was going to pick him up (and to see how this draft thing worked). I'll be totally honest. Every time a team pick was announced and it wasn't Manziel the cameras would pan over to his face and you couldn't help but feel a little bad for the kid. I don't know how he felt. Maybe he knew something we didn't but it was a little sad to watch. If you didn't already know he was finally drafted by the Cleveland Browns. So many comments on facebook were cracking jokes about him all night and then those same jokesters LOLOL'd because of the team. One of the aforementioned family Aggie alumni said it probably better than I could ever have said it. So many people laughing at someone who just made millions and was a first round draft pick. How many times have you been a first round draft pick in the National Football League? I'm guessing if you're reading this, none. Kudos to Johnny Manziel. You got me and probably thousands of other people like me to tune in to the NFL draft. In a few months, you'll probably fade from my memory at least and just be another team playing against my Seahawks or Cowboys. But at least for last night, you were a winner!

I'm not sure I'll tune into the draft next year. We'll have to see. I think now though I might watch Draft Day with the hubs. I mean I enjoyed Jerry McGuire enough. If I don't tune in, I can at least pretend next  year to be a seasoned pro. Oh ya, I remember when Manziel was drafted by the Browns. Good times.
